She was married to Lewis Hammack (1919 - 1996) on 21 Nov 1936 in Danville, Virginia. Her age on the marriage record was "17", however, according to her birth year and her age on the 1940 Census, she would have been 14 years old. They had 4 known children: Effie May Hammock Walker, Stella Elizabeth Hammock Markham, Scarlett Patricia Hammock, and Brenda Gayle Hammock Hatcher Davis.

Obituary
Bessie Mae Hammock, 84, formerly of 1430 Daniel Road, died Sunday, May 13, 2007 at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Martinsville. She had been in declining health for the past two years, and in the nursing home for the past nine months.
Born Nov. 8, 1922, in Dobson, N.C. (in Surry County), she was the daughter of the late John Edgar Doby and the late Della Coe Doby.
She lived her life in Danville as well as Axton. She was a homemaker, and of the Baptist faith.
She was married to Lewis Hammock on Nov. 21 1936; he died June 6, 1996.
She is survived by three daughters, Effie May Walker, of Danville, Stella Elizabeth Markham and Brenda Gayle Davis, both of Axton; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Scarlett Patricia Hammock; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16 at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Ricky Markham officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel; at other times they will be at the residence of Brenda and Dean Davis, 1408 Daniel Rd.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
