Thelma (Doby) Freeman was born in Virginia.

Themla Mae Doby was born on 9 Aug 1926 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia to Carl Lee Doby (1900 - 1986) and Emma (Holder) Doby (1903 - 1981). [1]

On the 1930 Census she was 3 years old and lived with her parents and siblings on Old Mayfield Road in Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. [2]

On the 1940 Census she was 13 years old and lived with her parents and siblings near Cameron and Carthage Roads in Rockingham County, North Carolina. [3]

She was married to Norman Barber Sr (1925 - 1981) around 1946. This date is just a guess based on her first child's birth year of 1947. They had three know children: Betty Lou Barber, Shirley Ann Barber, and Norman Barber Jr.

On the 1950 Census she was 23 years old and lived with her husband and children on Boun Road in West Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. [4]

In 1957 she was living on 2nd Street in Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. [5]

On 17 Apr 1975 she was divorced from Norman Barber Sr (1925 - 1981) in Lee County, North Carolina. She was living in Moore County, North Carolina at the time. [6]

Sometime after her first divorce she married James Roland Freeman (1924-1993). They were divorced on 6 May 1978 in Moore County, North Carolina. She was living in Moore County at the time. [7]

She passed away on 5 Dec 2003 in Pinehurst, Moore County, North Carolina and was buried at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage, Moore County, North Carolina. [8] [9] [10] [11]

Obituary

Thelma Doby Freeman, 77, of Carthage, died Friday (12/5/03) at HCR Manor Care in Pinehurst.
A native of Richmond, Va., she was a daughter of the late Carl and Emma Holder Doby.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Rowland Freeman. Private burial will be held in Cross Hill Cemetery.
Surviving are daughters, Betty Wilson and Shirley Hinton, both of Carthage; a son, Norman Barber Jr. of Carthage; sisters, Vera Pope of Carthage and Mable Horne of Cameron; a brother, Raymond Doby of Cameron; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial gifts may be made to FirstHealth Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, N.C. 28374. Arrangements are by Fry and Prickett Funeral Home.
