Biography

John Dodd was born in about 1826 in Leek, Staffordshire, England to John Dodd and Sarah (Parker?) Dodd - he was christened on 12 Feb 1826 in Ipstones, Staffordshire.[1]

  • Note on birthplace: census records are not consistant regarding where he was born - the 1861 census says Radford, Staffordshire; 1871 says Castle Church, Staffordshire; 1891 says Sherp Cliff; and 1851 & 1881 both say Leek, Staffordshire. Leek seems like the most likely one - both because it was on two separate censuses, and because it is much closer to the place where John was christened. John's siblings were born in various places around Staffordshire, so most likely the family moved around a fair bit, possibly causing confusion about who was born where.

In 1841 John Dodd (age 15-19) lived at Forebridge in Castle Church, Staffordshire with his father John (50-54), mother Sarah (40-44), and two brothers: Francis (10) and William (4).[2]

John Dodd married the widow Ann Dodd (nee Johnson) in 1845. The marriage was registered in Stafford, Staffordshire in the last quarter of the year.[3]

John and Ann had six children:

  1. John Dodd (1846-)
  2. Sarah (Dodd) Dodd (1847-1927)
  3. Emma Dodd (1849-)
  4. Hannah Dodd (1852-)
  5. Lucy Dodd (1854-)
  6. Francis Dodd (1856-)

In 1851 John Dodd (age 26, Farmer 20 Acres) lived in Castle Church with his wife Anne (36), five step-children: Elizabeth (12), Charles (11), George (10), Thomas (9), and Anne (8), and three children: Jno (4), Sarah (3), and Emma (1).[4]

In 1861 John Dodd (age 36, Farmer of 60 Acres) lived at Hyde Lea in Castle Church with his wife Ann (40, Farmers Wife), two stepsons: George (22, Waggoner) and Thomas (20, Farmers Son), and five children: John (15, Farmers Son), Sarah (14, Farmers Daughter), Hanah (8, Scholar), Lucy (6, Scholar), and Francis (4, Scholar).[5] Their daughter Emma (12, Scholar) lived with John's parents John & Sarah A Dodd in Castle Church.

In 1871 John Dodd (age 48, Labourer) lived in Rickerscote, Staffordshire with his wife Ann (58), two sons: John (24, Labourer) and Frank (16, Farm Servant), and granddaughter Jane (2) [listed as their child, she is actually the illegitimate child of their daughter Emma].[6]

In 1881 John Dodd (age 56, Farm Labourer) lived at Wolverhampton Road in Castle Church with his wife Mrs John Dodd (65).[7]

In 1891 John Dudd [Dodd] (age 66, Farm Labourer) livde at Lichfield Road in Castle Church with his wife Ann (76), son Francis (35, Bricklayer), daughter-in-law Sarah A (38), and six grandchildren: Ethel (12, Scholar), Agness (9, Scholar), Sarah A (7, Scholar), Francis (5, Scholar), William I (3), and Charles (0).[8]

John's wife passed away in 1896.

John Dodd passed away in 1899, aged 73 years. His death was registered in Stafford in the second quarter of the year.[9]
