Born in 1816, and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, Mary Elizabeth Dodd was the daughter of James and Cornelia (Bull) Dodd. She was 19 years old when she married Morris Earle, 10 years her senior, in 1835. Morris was a Hartford businessman but soon after their marriage they moved to New York City. During the years when Morris and Mary had their children they would winter in New York City and summer in Hartford where Mary's roots were deep. She was a descendant of the Bull family and the Steele family as well as the Dodds, all of whom were among the first settlers of Hartford, Connecticut.
Mary and Morris would have the following children:
Morris Dodd Earle (1837–1897)
James H. Earle (1839–1912)
William Charles Earle (1842–1907)
Mary (Earle) Jardine (1845–1873)
Cornelia D. Earle (1849–1920)
Ellen Fanny (Earle) Flagg (1852–1920)
Charles Dodd Earle (1859–1940)
Morris passed away 7 months before the birth of their last child, Charles. With several small children to care for, Mary kept a home in New York but continued to summer in Hartford where many in her family lived.
She died at the home of her brother, Mr. Charles B. Dodd, No. 90 Washington Street in Hartford, on August 14, 1894. She was 78 years old and is buried next to Morris in the Zion Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.
