Biography

William was born in 1811. Both of his parents seemed to have come from South Carolina[1]. He may, during the Civil War, been a part of the Benton Cadets, Missouri Infantry (Company F), in the role of a Sergeant[2][3]

Research Notes

William seems to have had a first wife. According to information found here * John Ferguson Dodds (1840-1918) on Find A Grave: Memorial #55987400 retrieved 9 December 2019 ,

"Online MO DC #10169 shows John F. Dodds, born Sept. 12, 1840 in MO. Married at death. Parents listed as Wm. S. Dodds, born MO, and Nancy Ferguson, born VA. Died March 30, 1918 in Pulaski Co, Dixon, MO at age 77 yrs 6 mo 18 days from Cancer of the Stomach. Mag Breeding, Dixon, MO informant on certificate. Burial in Dixon Cemetery, Dixon, MO on March 31, 1918."

And "Marriage, Gasconade Co, MO: William S. Dodds and Lucinda Dorne married 25 Nov 1845 in Gasconade Co, MO"

Therefore, Mary, Josephus, and John would most likely have been the offspring of this first marriage with Nancy Ferguson of Virginia, while Francis and Daniel were born to William Dodds's second wife, Lucinda Dorne of Ohio.
