I grew up mainly near Seattle, Washington, and I'm still living here. All of my (late) grandparents lived nearby. Only one came from out of the area as an adult - my paternal grandmother from upstate New York. She met my paternal grandfather at college after World War 2, and they made their home in Seattle (with a decade spent near Los Angeles). None of my family members could tell me much about our roots, with the exception of a great aunt who passed down an old family tree. I've found through research that many of my ancestors spent time in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York (1800s-1900s). A couple lines that I'm aware of emigrated from Germany in the 1740s. The other lines I know of have been here in the U.S. since the middle to late 1600s, mainly coming from Great Britain, though I have leads for possible Irish and Scottish ancestry. Through my and my sister's DNA tests, I've documented cousins through each of my 8 great grandparents - except on my direct maternal line - my mom's mom's mom. I do have matches to her dad, but not her mom (my 2nd great grandmother). I aim to document all descendants on that side. There aren't many - lots of only children or children who didn't have kids. I'm going back to the siblings of my 3rd great grandmother Amelia Etta Straub (1860-1944), who lived in Centre County, PA, Grand Island, NE, and Auburn, WA.
