Biography

John was born in 1790 in Alnwick Northumberland England the son of William Dodds and Ann Darling. John Dodds passed away in 1874 in Balmain, Sydney aged84 years. He was buried at the old Randwick cemetery 21/08/1874. Married to three English women Elizabeth Strother; Mary Frances Hindmarsh; Mary Hughes and one French Senegalese Sophie Feuilletaine.

He may have been married Sophie FEUILLETAINE in St Louis Senegal West Africa. John was in the British Navy and was an Aide-de-camp to the last English Governor of the colony.

John Dodds was a "Draper of Alnwick:. After the death of his second wife, Mary Frances Hindmarsh, when their youngest child also Mary Frances, was still less than a year old, John Dodds placed his family in he care of his sister, Ann, the wife of Thomas Skelly of "Freelands" Alnwick, who were childless. Dodds then went to the French colony of Senegal in W Africa. There he later married a French lady and they had a son. This third wife also died when a child was quite young and he was brought up by his mother's family as Frenchman. This son was educated at a Military Academy of St Cyr. He served as a Lieutenant in the Franco-Prussian War and was once captured but escaped. His whole life was spent in the French Army, a great deal of it in the tropical colonies of the world. He became General De Brigade in 1892. General de division in 1899. He was place on the Reserve in 1907 and died in Paris in 1922.

family history known by descendants We know he came to Australia with his wife Mary Hughes in c1850, also on board were Mary's mother and two sisters. John and Mary's first child was born in Sydney 1853, and son Sydney in Geelong VIC in 1855, then child 11 to 15 were born in Sydney.
