Biography

Josiah R. Dodge was born December 1818.

He married Margaret (nee Flick) Hollister in 1860 according to the 1860 Census.

Josiah is recorded in the 1860 United States Census, enumerated 09 June, as Josiah Dodge residing in the 2nd Ward Covington City, Kenton County, Kentucky. He is 40 years old, Kentucky is entered as his birth state, he is able to read and write, and no occupation is entered for him. He owns real estate valued at 5,000 (about $160,875.90 in 2021 dollars) with a personal estate valued at 4,500 (about $144,788.31 in 2021 dollars). Also residing in the household are his wife Margaret Dodge and her daughters 17-year-old Esther Hollister and seven year old Frances [recorded as Franka] Hollister. A servant Mary Goff and her nine year old daughter Anna are also residing in the household. Mary is 46 years old and Ireland is entered as her birth country. Ohio is entered as Anna's birth state and she had been attending school. The 1860 Slave Schedule records Josiah as owning one 18 year old female mulatto slave. She is recorded as being a fugitive from the state.

Josiah is 49 years old, Kentucky is entered as his birth state, he is able to read and write, and he is a real estate agent. He owns real estate valued at 8,000 (about $163,086.41 in 2021 dollars) with a personal estate valued at 3000 (about $61,157.40 in 2021 dollars). Also residing in the household are his wife Margaret Dodge, Margaret's daughter Frances [recorded Francis] Davis and two female domestic servants 12 year old Edmona and 26 year old Lou, both having been born in Kentucky and both are mulattos.

He is 49 years old, Kentucky is entered as his birth state, he is able to read and write, and he is a real estate agent. He owns real estate valued at 8,000 with a personal estate valued at 3000. Also residing in the household are his wife Margaret [recorded Margeret Doge]; Margaret's daughter Frances Davis and her family. Margaret's son-in-law Theodore Davis and her grandchildren 10 year old Lyman Davis, eight year old Margeret Davis, and six year old Clifford Davis.

Josiah is recorded in the 1900 United States Census, enumerated 29 June, as Josiah R. Dodge head of household, residing in the Sanfordstown Precint, Kenton County, Kentucky. His birth date is entered as December 1818, he is 81 years old, Kentucky is entered as his birth state and for both of his parents. He is able to read and write, and no occupation is entered for him. Also residing in the household is his wife Margaret, they have been married 41 years and own their home free of mortgage; Margaret's daughter Frances, her son-in-law Theodore Davis [recorded as T.C. Davis] and her granddaughter Margaret Davis

He was 90 years old when he died 20 Jul 1908. His funeral was held at his residence and he is buried at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Commonwealth of Kentucky. His grave is located in Section 09, Lot 39, Grave 03, there is no marker for his grave. He was one of the pioneer citizens of Covington, having lived there for more than 75 years. He was the oldest Mason in Kenton County.
