Biography

George Dodson was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia about 1773. George was the son of Reverend George Dodson, Jr and Elizabeth Margaret Reid.

George married Martha Lockhart, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Lockhart on the 8th April, 1793 in Patrick County, Virginia. Martha's mother, Elizabeth Lockhart gave her permission for a marriage license to be issued to George Dodson to marry her daughter Martha. The document reads as follows: "Sr this comes to desire you to grant George Dodson license to marry my Daughter Martha as it her mind it very agreeable to me and you will oblige yours Elizabeth her X mark Lockhart April 6, 1793 Witness Samuel Staples" This note is attached to the marriage bond and marriage license. [1] George Dodson, minister, performed the ceremony; Jesse Dodson and George Dodson, Sr were securities on the marriage bond.[2]

George lived in Virginia until about 1811 when he moved his family to Wayne County, Kentucky. George was ordained "to the ministry in April 1824 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Wayne County." George served as a minister until he moved to Indiana about 1827.[2]

George appears in the 1820 Federal census in Wayne County, Kentucky. George's household appears as follows: 1 male age 16 thru 18; 2 males age 16 thru 25; 1 male age 26 thru 44; 1 male age 45 and over; 3 females under age 10; 2 females age 10 thru 15; and 2 females age 26 thru 44.[3]

George moved his family to Indiana about 1827. Family histories state that George moved directly to Boone County, Indiana; however, Boone county, Indiana was not formed until April 1830.[4] George appears in the 1830 Federal census in Hendricks County, Indiana which is on the southern border of Boone County, Indiana. George's household in the 1830 Federal census appears as follows: 1 male age 10 thru 14; 1 male age 50 thru 59; 1 female age 5 thru 9; 1 female age 10 thru 14; and 1 female age 40 thru 49.[5]

George received a land patent from the U.S. Government (Certificate No. 21502) for forty acres of land on the 15th of October 1835, in Boone County, Indiana. The legal description of the land was: "South East Quarter of the South West Quarter of Section 10, Township 18 North, Range 2 East.[6]

George appears in the 1840 Federal census in Boone County, Indiana. George's household appears as follows: 1 male age 20 thru 29; 1 male age 70 thru 79, 2 females age 10 thru 14; and 1 female age 60 thru 69.[7]

George died the 8th September 1846 in Boone County and is buried in the Eagle Creek Regular Baptist Cemetery, Eagle Village, Boone County, Indiana.[8]

was one of the early settlers of Eagle Creek [Indiana], arriving as early as 1827. He was born in the State of Virginia in [c.] 1776. He married Martha Lockhart in Virginia; subsequently moved to Kentucky, and remained there until the year 1827. He was among the first Baptist Ministers who preached in Boone County, and mainly through his influence the church called Eagle Creek Regular Baptist Church was organized, which is yet living and has had great influence for good the past sixty years. Mr. Dodson was a regularly ordained Baptist minister; was at the constituting of the above church, and served as its preacher till death ended this good man --died in [c.] 1848. He is buried at or near the church, and where his best days were spent, and where he did so much to develop -- not only in a spiritual sense, but he helped with his own hands to clear away the woods; helped make the roads, and, in fact, was in every good word and work. Just such a man was needed. He came, filled his mission, and filled it well. He left a spotless record, both in and out of the church. The good George Dodson lives yet, and will for years to come. Reader, should you visit his grave, on Eagle Creek, you may truthfully say: " Here lies a good man, the noblest work of God."

The following are his children's names: Elizabeth, Nancy, Margaret, Irena, George, Martha, Ruel, John, Mary, Judah, Robert and Jemima. Elizabeth, married to Maston Johnson, died in 1872, at the age of eighty years, and is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, east of the cemetery in Worth Township. Thomas married . He died in 1883, aged ninety years, and is buried in Eagle Creek Cemetery beside his companion. Nancy was married to William Davenport. She died in 1854. Margaret resides in Kentucky. Irena, married to John Vaughn, is yet living. George married Rebecca Headspeth, and lives in Virginia. Martha married Aaron Philps; both are dead; died in Illinois. Rual married Mary Dickerson; both died in Illinois. John died in Virginia at the age of nineteen years. Mary married Elijah Dickerson ; both died in Boone County, and are buried at the Eagle Creek Cemetery. Juda married John Kinman, and resides in Missouri. Robert, married to Mary White, resides in Worth Township, where he has lived over fifty years; owns a splendid farm, and enjoys the confidence of the people with whom he has lived so long. He too, as well as his aged companion, know all about the early life in Boone County. They both belong to the Regular Baptist Church, at Eagle Creek. Jemima, married to Stephen Lane in 1839, is yet living. Mr. Lane is yet living.

Dodson-4333 and Dodson-1118 appear to represent the same person because: Both men are George Dodson and both men died in Boone County, Indiana. George Dodson-4333 has no sources while George Dodson-1118 has multiple sources. Both men are listed with the some of the same children which will also need to be merged. These amen re both the same and should be merged to eliminate duplicates.

Both men are the father of the same Thomas Dodson and both men died on the same date in the same location. They are duplicates and should be merged.
