Research Notes

Note NI0019Daniel Dodson ca. 1635 - ca. 1675 of Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England.
The only known information about the Daniel, said to be the parent to three Dodson siblings who migrated to America, is found in "The Dodson Genealogy 1600 - 1907" by Thompson P Ege. Rev Ege, his wife, his son-in-law were all descendants of a Richard Dodson born in 1731, who, based on Ege's book, would have been a great grandson of Daniel.
Ege reports that three children of Daniel and Suzanne Dodson came to Burlington NJ from the Knaresborough family, John, brother Thomas and sister Mary. He shows the family line as
Parents: Daniel and Susanne Dodson.
Children:
John Dodson, b. March, 1655
Susanne, b. abt. 1657
David, b. abt. 1659
Dorothy, b. abt. 1661
Mary, b. November 17th, 1664
William, b. abt. 1666
Thomas, b. October 19th, 1669
He adds:
The Burlington Records, New Jersey, furnished the names of the three who came in 1677 with other Quaker settlers to their new settlement, and stated Yorkshire as the place of their English home. This fact gave the clue for research in England. The fact that they were Quakers limited the search somewhat to the Society of Friends, and their various
places of meeting, as well as to the Parish Records of the English Church in the vicinity of Friends' meetings. It is worthy of note that the only Dodson names, found by expert
research in any Friends' Meeting Records, were in this one of Knaresborough ; and while Dodson names were found in the Parish Records, both before and after the time of this
particular family, none of the above names were found in them. The Friends record as given was beautifully kept and well preserved, and it is a matter of regret that the expert searcher was so rejoiced to find the names of the New Jersey three, that the exact birth dates of all the others of the family were not taken.
Speculation by Ege: There may seem to be a difficulty in reconciling the fact that Mary and Thomas were so young at the time of their coming to New Jersey in 1677. This may be explained as follows : The parents of these brothers and sister may have died, and John, the oldest son, was responsible for the care of this youngest brother and sister. Besides this, a reference in the Town Annals of Burlington show that the Buntings were related to the Dodsons, in whose company they came, and it is very probable that the wife of John was one of this family, as no record of his marriage is found there . . .
Ege says: John Dodson settled finally in Cheltenham Township, then Philadelphia County, near the Bucks County line, and nearly opposite Burlington County. He became a farmer there, and was living there as late at 1725, at which time, (April 7th, 1725) he witnessed the Will of one Toby Lynch. (Reference, "Will Book E, page 10, Philadelphia
Record Office.")
Mary Dodson Born Nov. 11, 1664 married in Burlington in 1683, Richard Boyes. Reference "Town Annals of Burlington." This line has not been traced, tho' there are descendants of the Boyes name still remaining in Burlington County.
Thomas Dodson, of Daniel I. Born October 19, 1669 married July 16, 1698, Katharine Savill, daughter of John Savill, of Snape, England.
Questions: When did the Dodson siblings come to America?
1. How does Ege know that the John who witnessed the will is the same John who was born in England and migrated to NJ and ends up in Cheltenham Twp.
2. Where was John after he came to America until he was 70 years ol
3. Did John have children? If Thomas is son, was he the only child?
4. How do we know that Thomas who married Mary Prigg in 1718 is his son?
5. We know Mary was still in NJ in 1683 when she married at age 19 - where were John and Thomas?
6. Where did Thomas marry Katherine Savill in 1698? Any record?
7. Thomas was 29 years old, if same Thomas, when he married Katherine; this seems rather old - was there a prior marriage or could this be a different Thomas?
8. Other than Ege, is there any research on these three Dodsons who came to America?
9. Why are their no Daniel descendants in any of these lines?

Thomas son of Daniel Dodson married Katherine Savill on 16 September 1698 "at the house of John Rendle of Snape" (Yorkshire, England). There were 23 witnesses including two Daniel Dodsons and a Hannah Dodson. It was reported at the Masham monthly meeting.[1] Thomas and Catherine had children in Knaresborough and appear to have died there.[2]

Daniel and Susanna are shown as "Dodgson" in the birth registrations of their children at Knaresborough monthly meeting.[3][4][5]
