Biography

Juda Dodson was born about 1815 in Wayne county, Kentucky. Juda was the daughter of George Dodson and Martha Lockhart.[1][2]

Juda married John Samuel Kinman on the 16th February 1834 in Boone county, Indiana.[3]

Juda appears in the appropriate age group in the 1840 Federal census in the household of her husband, John S. Kinman. John's household appears as follows: 1 male age 5 thru 9; 1 male age 20 thru 29; 1 male age 30 thru 39; 1 female under age 5; and 1 female age 15 thru 19.[4] John S. Kinman's household is one household above his father-in-law, George Dodson who also appears in the 1840 census in Boone county, Indiana.[5]

Juda and her husband, along with Juda's brother Ruel Dodson and Juda's mother, Martha Dodson moved to Vermilion county, Illinois before 1850. Juda appears in the 1850 Federal census in Vermilion county, Illinois in the household of her husband, John S. Kinman. Juda's husband, John S. Kinman, died sometime before 1858.

Juda married her second husband, the widower, John D. Huffman on the 24th May 1858 in Vermilion county, Illinois.[8]

Juda appears in the 1860 Federal census in Blount Township, Vermilion county, Illinois in the household of her husband, John D. Houghman (spelling of surname in census). John's household appears as follows: John D. Houghman age 54; Juda age 45; Ruel Hinman (Kinman) age 15; Catharine A. Hinman age 15; H.E. Hinman age 14; Sylvester S. Hinman age 11; John T. Houghman age 9; John S. Hinman age 10; and Julia E. Houghman age 3 months.[9] Listed on the same page of the census is Ruel Dodson's household, three households below his sister, Juda and brother-in-law John D. Houghman.

Juda appears in the 1870 Federal census in Blount Township, Vermilion county, Illinois in the household of her husband John D. Huffman. John's household appears as follows: John age 64; Juda age 55; Silvester Huffman age 21; John Kinman age 19; John J. Huffman age 18; and Julia Huffman age 10.[10]

Juda's exact date of death is unknown but she died sometime after 1880. Juda appears in the 1880 Federal census in Vermilion county, Illinois but does not appear in the 1900 Federal census.

Research Notes

Juda's name appears in various records as Judith and Judy. Juda has also been given a middle name of "Ellen", however, no records have been located showing Juda used or had a middle name. Juda's daughter did have the name Juda Ellen. Juda's daughter's tombstone gives her name as Judy Ellen. "Find A Grave Index," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVV2-QXCW : 11 July 2016), Judy Ellen Huffman Smith, 1947; Burial, Elmo, Nodaway, Missouri, United States of America, Six Corners Cemetery. It is possible people have confused the two women and assigned the daughter's middle name of "Ellen" to her mother.

Dodson-5648 and Dodson-4003 appear to represent the same person because: Both women have the same name with the one profile having spelling variations found in various records. Both women are married to the same men. Dodson-5648 has a more complete biography with multiple sources. These women are duplicates and should be merged.
