William was born in 1826. William Dodson ... He passed away in 1865.[1]

In 1860 William and Mary Dodson are shown with four children in Peytonsburg, southern Pittsylvania.

Also in the house was probable niece Lucy L Dodson, born 1847.

William and Mary would have one more child, Phoebe, in 1862, as shown in 1870 census with widow Mary in Chatham, north of Dan River in Pittsylvania.

William joined the 38th Virginia Infantry, Company C, in 1864. He was taken prisoner and sent to Point Lookout Prison in southern Maryland.

Over 3,300 CSA POWs died at Point Lookout Prison between 1863-1865, and at least 14 from the 38th Virginia Infantry, including William Dodson.

The names of the known dead are on metal plates around the pictured obelisk. Many of the men have bricks provided by relatives, in a courtyard nearby.
