Frederick was born 20th May 1890 in Hukanui, in the Waikato; the only son of Selina Maud and Albert Frederic Dodson. [1]
He was an auctioneer for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd; ' and the employees of that great firm, who liked him and respected his sterling qualities, (were) deeply grieved at his death '. [2] [3] and was secretary for the Tauranga Rugby Union. [4]
As Second Lieutenant, Frederick Hugh Dodson served in the 6th (Hauraki) Company, Auckland Infantry Battalion NZEF. He had three years experience as a territorial officer in the Hauraki Regiment. He enlisted at Paeroa for active service on the 14th August 1914.
He was promoted Lieutenant on board the troopship .... 29th January 1915. [5]
He was killed in action in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915. [6]
On the 25th April 1915, during the first landings of the Gallipoli Campaign, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. landed near Ari Burnu, in a bay now known as Anzac Cove. Lieutenant F. H. Dodson was leading one of the platoons of the Haurakri Company when he was killed. The note of his death in his military record reads - 'Killed in action, Dardanelles between 25th & 29th April 1915'. He was 24 years old; 5'9" tall, with hazel eyes and light brown hair.[7] [8]
With no known grave; Lieutenant Frederick Hugh Dodson is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli; section 72 [9]
