Biography

James was born about 1814 in Indiana. He was the first son and second child of William Dodson and his first wife, whose name is not currently known.

By the time he was 10, his mother had died, and his father had married Elizabeth Smith (Moredock). In all, he had 6 brothers (1 full-brother) and 6 sisters (2 full-sisters).

He likely died before 1840 without marrying.

Research notes

Sources referring to James

According to Lilian Hays Oliver, William Dodson and his first wife had a son named James, who died single.[1]

James appears to be one of the male children aged under age 10 noted in the household of William Dodson in the 1820 US federal census for Jefferson Township in Switzerland County, Indiana[2], and the male child aged 15-19 in the 1830 US federal census for Randolph Township in Dearborn County, Indiana[3].

No other records refer to him, so he may have died by 1840.
