Biography

Drusilla was born 27 March 1837 in Kentucky.[1]

By 1850 her 52-year-old mother Sophiah (born Georgia) headed the household in Marshall County, Kentucky, that included Drusilla (age 14, b. Kentucky), and her siblings Ann Marie (16, b. Tennessee) and John (15, laborer, b. Tennessee).[2]

She is probably the "D. Dotson" recorded in the 1860 census,[3] in the household of her married brother Jerome in Marshall, KY:

JB Dotson 30, farmer, TN (unable to read or write)
H Dotson, 27, KY (unable to read or write)
DB Dotson, m, 10, KY (attended school)
ME Dotson, f, 5, KY
AM Dotson, m, 2, KY
D Dotson, f, 22, KY (unable to read or write)

On 24 November 1861 in Marshall County, she married David M. Ferguson[4][5] with whom she had four children[6].

On 15 April 1876 in Marshall County, she remarried to Michael Coleman.[7]

She is recorded in the 1880 census, as "Priscilla" Coleman in the household of Michael Coleman in Jacksonville, Obion, Tennessee.[8] Michael is 60, working on the railroad. Priscilla is 42, Susan Furguson is 17, William Furguson is 15, Isaac L. Furguson is 11 (both William and Isaac working on the farm, and these three children listed as his wife's children), Nancy Coleman is 8 and John Coleman is 3.

1900 Census[9] Lucela Colman(61) & son, Willie Colman(35), daughter Susan Petit and family are next door.

1910 Census[10] Drucilla Coleman(71) and son, Will Ferguson(48), daughter Susan Petit and family are next door.

She passed away from pneumonia[1] at the age of 81 in 1919.[11]

Research Notes

  • Maiden Name: While Dotson/Dobson and variations are often shown on documents as her maiden name, her son John Dodson Coleman, signed his middle name as Dodson, which makes this the most likely spelling. Father's name on death certificate is also spelled Dodson.
  • Parents: An undocumented biography on Find-a-Grave indicates her parents are Limech [sic, Lamech] and Sophia (Williams) Dodson. Sophia is supported by the 1850 census, but nothing further has been located.
