Subject: Dodson Lineage
Betty, good to hear from any fellow Dodson/Dotson researcher.
I've been researching my particular line for a long time, and did the DNA to confirm that I wasn't just wasting my time "barking up the wrong tree." My line comes down from Charles Dodson Sr. (or Charles I), then through his son Charles Jr., Fortunatus, Samuel, all born in Richmond Co., Va. It continues down through Samuel's son Micajah Cager Dodson, William Campbell Dodson, Elisha John Dodson, all born in Pittsylvania Co., Va.. Then my G Grandfather James A., my grandfather Zachariah Flemon Dodson, both born in Patrick Co., Va., My father, William Elmer Dodson, was born on the old family farm just across the line from Patrick in Franklin Co., Va. near Ferrum.

It's been a bit of a struggle finding actual documents on a few of them, esp. Samuel (whose records mostly were destroyed in a church fire in the early 1800s), and my G Grandfather James, who died at a young age in 1890 along with his wife, Georgianna Clift Dodson. They died within 2 wks of each other from "consumption" - on the death report-but according to family lore the cause was actually some sort of food poisoning during or shortly after a train trip. I actually suspect some sort of flu or possibly cholera might have been the cause of death.

I started all this research looking for a picture of James and Georgianna Dodson, but to this day they are the only ones in that entire immediate family I DON'T have a portrait of. Go figure, huh? My grandfather was only three when his father and mother died, and was raised by his grandfather and grandmother. ( Elisha John and Nancy Dodson) He had very little memory of his parents, but did have stories told to him that he passed down to me. Those family stories have, for the most part, proven true, and have been a tremendous help in my research. I've managed to obtain loads of documents on all of these ancestors, but am always searching for more. I had 23 or so close matches on my 37 point marker DNA study, and all except for 4-5 were Dodson's or Dotson's. Those that replied to my emails all had a paper trail that led back to Charles Sr., through one or another of his sons. The remainder were people of various names, who, like Lynn's brother, didn't match anyone with their surname, but did match several Dodsons and were looking to ID a Dodson ancestor that could be theirs.
I'd be more than happy to share my DNA report with you, and will send it to you as soon as I print and scan it to my hard drive. I've run across your research site more than once. You have certainly put a lot of work in it. Everything you have on the site seems very concise, and easy to read. If you don't mind, when I get ready to put a site together, I would love to ask you for any advice/suggestions you may have.
Thanks, and look forward to talking to you again soon,
Truman
