The noted Yorkshire antiquary. Author of Dugdale's Monasticon Roger Dodsworth was born 24 Jul 1585 in Newton Grange, Oswaldkirk, York, England and was the son of Matthew Dodsworth, Registrar of York Cathedral. [1] [2] His maternal grandfather was Ralph Sandwith. His father was Dodsworth, Matthew, (1590-c 1625), Chancellor of York (bachelor of laws); Archbishop and Chancellor of York, Registrar.
Roger was born at the home of his maternal grandfather, Ralph Samwith at Newton Grange, Oswalkdirk, Yorkshire. There is a question of birth date as in the Parish Register according to Dictionary of National Biography Vol 1-22 for Roger he was baptised 24 Apr 1585. For this purpose we will use the baptism date as per the Parish register. 24 Jul 1585.
Roger, child of Matthew Dodsworth, was born on 24 Jul 1585 and baptised in August 1654 and died in August 1654.[3].
Roger (42) married Holcroft Hesketh (42) (born about 1577 in Lancashire; daughter of Robert Hesketh MP and Marie (Stanley) Hesketh) on August 25, 1620 in Rufford, Lancashire, England. Holcroft was a widow of Lawrence Rosthorne (Rostorne) and was at the time of her marriage living at Hutton Grange. [4]
In 1599 he attended Archbishop Hutton's School, at Warton, (Walton), Lancashire, under Miles Dawson, afterwards Vicar of Bolton. In early life he became known to the Fairfaxes of Denton, who were his patrons. He married Holcroft, widow of Lawrence Rawstone of Hutton Grange, Lancashire, and eldest daughter of Sir Robert Hesketh of Rufford, and took up his residence at Hutton Grange, only leaving it when on antiquarian expeditions. He witnessed the execution of Walter Calverley at York. At an early age he became an antiquary. In 1635 he prepared a pedigree which is still extant. He studied in the Library of Sir Robert Cotton in London and visited all the Churches of Yorkshire.
In 1635 he received a pension of £50 from Lord Fairfax. He died, 1654, and was buried at Rufford. His wife died before him leaving four children:
Robert was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge and held a benefice at Barton, North Riding of Yorkshire.
One hundred and sixty-two volumes of his MSS. are in the Bodleian Library, Oxford; although he was unpublished he designed three works. An English baronage, A history of Yorkshire and a Manasticon Anglicanum.
Roger died in Aug of 1654. [3] His will dated 30 Jun 1654 and in it he stated that his work 'Monasticon' was then at press and he begs John Rushworth to direct its publication.

Re the visitation of Lancashire by Sir William Dugdale : It is thought that the noted Antiquarian Dodsworth that married Sir Roberts sister Holcrofte was responsible for this missive, however unpublished at his deathbed he asked, pleaded with Dugdale to publish on his behalf.
