Biography

Elizabeth Highley 1765 to 1852?

Elizabeth Highley Shriver was born Dunkards Creek, Pennsylvania and Virginia border. The Brown, Shriver, Statler and Hiley families lived here after 1760 moving from Hampshire, Virginia being sold land warrants from the Colonial Virginia Crown Government to expand westward towards the Ohio River and build small forts to protect their farms and homes from attack of local natives and the French.

Elizabeth married George Hiley jr after 1790? We know of three children, Peter born 1794 to 1867; Elizabeth Pool 1815 to 1882 and Margaret Dillon 1807 to 1882.

The 1820 Census have George and Elizabeth living in Greene Co. Pennsylvania. I am looking at the 1800 and 1810 ones. Peter and Margaret Hensel married about 1822 in Monongalia, Virginia. We believe George died 1825? His first two grandchildren Margaret and John were born 1823 and1827 in Monongalia, Virginia.

Peter Highley first purchase of land in Perry Twp Monroe, Ohio is 1828, same year as Elias and son Adam Shriver in Green Twp. This based tax records for 1827, 1828 ... 1839.

Elizabeth Highley 1834 purchase of 40 acres and 1837 purchase of 29 acres both in Monroe at the Marietta, Ohio Land Office. No tax records found. Most Monroe County, Ohio records lost from 1867 courthouse fire. Source for BLM. google: Bureau of Land Management genealogy.

1840 Census, Elizabeth Highley resident of Perry Twp. Monroe, Ohio; 1 female age 20 to 30 and Elizbeth 70 to 80. Her neighbor is James Dillon father of William Dillon who marries her daughter Elizabeth about 1842.

1850 Census Elizabeth Highley found in 3 residents of Thomas and Margaret Hightley Pool of Jolly Washington, Ohio - Elizabeth age 85 and born PA; William and Elizabeth Highley Dillon of Green Monroe, Ohio Elizabeth age 80 and born VA; Peter Highley of Perry Monroe, Ohio - Elizabeth age 76 and born Virginia.

1855, Elias Shriver and all his (12) children except Adam, moved to Wayne County, Iowa, cousins Margaret Pool and Elizabeth Dillon move to Morgan Decatur, Iowa west of Wayne Co. on the Iowa - Missouri border. Relations continue, Abraham and Henry Dillon marry the Galpin sisters of Delaware, Ohio who moved to Wayne 1861.

1820 to 2020 over 150 Shriver marriages recorded in Monongalia West Virginia. There are no marriage documents found in 1765 Dunkards Creek where no State boundaries existed. Maybe a family bible exists with records of births, deaths and weddings? Good luck! There is little hope the maiden name for Elizabeth is Shriver, however the documents of 3 states shows a close relationship with Elizabeth and her children with the Shriver family for 100 years.

Sources for the 1850 Census see the children's bio.

Conclusion: Elizabeth Highley was the husband of George Hiley jr. and the close neighbor of George Hiley and Catherone Statler of Monongalia, Virginia. Richard
