Hugh Doherty was born in Surrey, England.

Hugh Lawrence Doherty was a British tennis player and six-time Grand Slam Champion. He competed at the 1900 Olympics in Paris, winning the men's singles and doubles.

He was born in 1875 in Wimbledon, London.^[1] He was the youngest son of William Doherty and his wife Catherine Ann Davis, and the younger brother of tennis player Reginald Doherty. He was baptised on 1 January 1876 at Wimbledon, Surrey.^[2]

He was educated Westminster School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

He died in 1919, aged 43, in Broadstairs, Kent.^[3]

He and his brother Reginald were inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1980.
