Biography

Mary Ann was the daughter of William Doherty and Margaret (Bridget) Brew.

Bridget (nee Brew) Doherty is also recorded as Margaret on Mary Ann's Death Certficate.

She came to Victoria with her family on the ship 'Westminster' in 1839. 1 An elder brother also sailed with the family, name unknown and aged between 7 and 14 years.

Mary Ann was baptised in 1840 in Victoria.

The Doherty family settled at Williamstown where William was engaged by Mr Marshall.

In 1857, aged 18, Mary Ann married Edward Clemens, son of William Clemens and Frances Williams. The wedding witnessed by John Connell and William Doherty at Christ Church, Hawthorn.

Two children were born in Australia, William Francis and John Thomas.

On the 22 October 1859 Mary and her family sailed to New Zealand from Melbourne on the ship Vistula. They disembarked in Lyttleton eventually making their way to Picton. The family was recorded as Clements.

The family grew in size over the years with 13 more children. Mary and Edward settled at Shakespeare Bay with Edward turning to farming when his attempts to begin coal mining didn't do well.

Mary (Doherty) passed away in 1903 aged 67 predeceasing Edward by 2 years. Mary Ann Clemens is buried at Picton Cemetery. LOCATION - LAWN, BLK 20, PLOT 22. [1]
