Biography

Victoria was born about 1852. She is the daughter of Jesse Dollar and Mary Bouley. She was living with her parents and siblings in Fulton County, Georgia in 1860. War came to the south and to Georgia in April of 1861.

Verlinda Queen Victoria was a child during the great war that followed the Spring of 1861. She had four uncles that were in the Confederate Army. Her eldest brother was also a Confederate soldier. Her uncle John Arch died in Tennessee in 1863. Her uncles, William and Chaney were in the 30th Georgia Infantry Regiment and were in the fighting in many locations. Her uncle, Joseph was in the 34th Georgia Infantry. The war with all of the horror and destruction came to Fulton County in 1864. Fulton County was over run with Union soldiers under General Sherman. The city of Atlanta was under bombardment. Atlanta was attacked and many battles were fought in the area. When the Confederate army under General Hood left the area, Atlanta was sacked by General Sherman and his troops. Atlanta civilians were forced to evacuate and then the city was almost completely destroyed.

Verlinda had lost an uncle during the war and had seen many things a young girl should not have seen. After Sherman left on his destructive march to the sea Atlanta was in ruins. Verlinda and her family had to go on and they endured. After the war ended the family then had to endure occupation by Federal troops during the Reconstruction period.
