Gebhard of Dollnstein-Hirschberg was born about 1018 in the Swabia, Kingdom of Germany, the Holy Roman Empire. His father was Count Hartwig of Calw.[1][2]
At the age of 24 he was appointed Bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria.[2]
In March 1055 Gebhard accepted the papacy on the understanding that the emperor restore all possessions taken from the Apostolic See. He was enthroned on 13 April 1055 at St Peter's Basilica.[2][1] Platina[3] states:
He died at Arezzo on 28 July 1057 and was buried in the Church of Santa Maria Rotonda at Ravenna.[2][1] His pontificate lasted two years, three months and fourteen days after which the see was vacant for five days.[3]
