One Of Nelson's Best Known Residents Passes
Mrs. Jane Vause, of Mount Gambler, who died after five weeks illness at the residence of Mr. W. H. Vause, at the age of 85 years, was one of Nelson's best known residents for many years.
With her husband, she conducted the Nelson Hotel, where her culinary ability became so well known that it was often remarked that, ""If you wish to taste fish at their best, go to Vause's hotel at Nelson.""
Mrs. Vause was an expert fisherwoman and enjoyed many quiet hours fishing in the Glenelg River. She also excelled as a gun and rifle shot, and there still lives in Mount Gambier a man, who early this century, was challenged and defeated on the target at the showground gallery.
Mrs. Vause was well known for her charitable nature.
She was born at Gawler and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Doman. Messrs. John Doman, of Yahl and Joseph Doman, of Mount Gambier were brothers. Other brothers were the late Messrs. James William and Thomas Doman. Mrs. Elizabeth Boardman, of Yahl and Mrs. Annie Hutchesson, of Caroline, were sisters. Three sisters, Emily, Mary and Lucy, predeceased her.
She was married at Wandilo to Harry Thomas Vause. Messr's. Thomas (Adelaide), William, John (Mount Gambier), and Albert (Wandilo) are sons.
Mrs. Vause spent the early part of her life in the Nelson district. After her marriage, she lived for a number of years along the Adelaide railway line at West Hadden about six miles from Mount Gambier. Later, she and her husband acquired the Nelson Hotel.
Senior Captain Adams of the Salvation Army conducted the service at her graveside at the Mount Gambier Cemetery. Pearce's carried out funeral arrangements. Pall bearers were Messrs. E. Boardman, Lyons, E. Doman, Yahl, Walter Vause, Adelaide, and Alan Vause, Wandilo. [12]
Harry and Jane are buried together at the Mount Gambier (Lake Terrace) Cemetery.[13][14] [15]
