Biography

Norman was born in 1900.

Arrived in Australia aboard the "Medic" in 1914 with parents James aged 48, and Mary Ellen Donnell aged 36 .Also with them were Norman's siblings  ? twin, Phyllis aged 11,and Leslie aged 14.

MELBOURNE Wednesday Norman McKenzie Donnell a youth of 18 years, who lived at Mooreland with his parents, has lost the sight of his left eye as the result of a strange accident. His father having purchased a property at Mordialloc the lad assisted in removing the.furniture. At the house at Mordialloc one of the fireplaces was full of papers and rubbish, and the boy feeling cold, put a match to it to obtain some warmth.As the fire blazed up an explosion occurred and some thing struck young Donnell in the right eye , blinding him. A medical inspection on the injured eye was made , and it was found necessary to remove the eye altogether. At the back of the eye, which had been completely destroyed a piece of the copper casing of a small cartridge was found embedded. The previous tenants of the house in placing papers and other rubbish in the fireplace , had also , unknowingly put a live cartridge in with them.
