At the house at Mordialloc one of the fireplaces was full of papers and rubbish, and the boy feeling cold, put a match to it to obtain some warmth. As the fire blazed up an explosion occurred and some thing struck young Donnell in the right eye , blinding him. A medical inspection on the injured eye was made , and it was found necessary to remove the eye altogether. At the back of the eye, which had been completely destroyed a piece of the copper casing of a small cartridge was found embedded.
