Biography

Sometimes spelling of Julia's last name is Donovan, and sometimes Donavan.

Yes, my Grandmother Julia nee O Donovan Sutton married Nat (Nathaniel Sutton). She lived with us in Timoleague and Bandon and was a great person. She herself went to England when she was very young to live with an Aunt who had no children. She was extremely well educated for the time. She came back to Ireland when she was 17 or 18 and found that her entire family who lived in Richfordstown were emigating to America (Pittsburgh) and she said "I had the choice of going with them or marrying Nat Sutton, a widower. I knew he was a fine upstanding man and would treat me well and I knew nothing at all about America, so I married Nat Sutton. " So that shows us what choices young women had in the Nintheen Century. She was very sad that Lily (she was also known as Doreen) went to Australia. She said they got on very well together but the Knowles family (first wife of Nat) didnt want a Catholic bringing up their niece. Nathaniel was Church of Ireland but had a Catholic mother (Annie Coakley) so he was ecumenical. He did convert to the Catholic faith in his old age when....according to my mother.....he had a "falling out" with the local Rector. Julia, got on extremely well with George Sutton and Bob Sutton. George had a farm in Rocksavage and was married to a lady named Batemen. George sold the farm later to Nathanial Sutton (Nathaniel Sr. son and Lizzie (my mother) brother. Ellen and Minnie (McCarthy) were in Timoleague, The Hotel.... and the whole Sutton Family, both first and second, were very close. I remember Granny being very sad always about the fact that Lily was sent away. She often talked about her to me and we had a lovely photograph of her wedding. Years later........when I was doing up the house in Courtmac, first time in around 1979, the bell rang on the front door... I answered it and saw a lovely lady standing there smiling at me and I said "are you related to Lily Sutton and she burst into tears and said "She was my Gran". As it happened, Mammy was with me that day and I will never forget the Joy!!!!! So...the McLoughlins are cousins. Margaret McLoughlin. We have seen Erin and her twin, sisters, and Margaret and Brian as well and also Jake who is their cousin. I gave the addresses to Sue Maddison a few years ago who has done a huge amount of research on the McCarthy clan. It is great to get both sides of story. Religion was a curse in Ireland and caused great damage to loving families. It was all about "what the neighbours would think" instead of what the families knew to be the truth.
