Benjamin is the son of Samuel and Mary (Fenn) Doolittle, early pioneers in Connecticut Colony. He was born in 1730 and died in 1782 at the age of 52, He was a farmer and served in the Revolutionary war starting at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
The following statement about Benjamin's military service is given in the Doolittle Family History by William Frederick Doolittle.
"At the out- break of the Revolution he took his own oxen and cart and hauled shot and shell in the Continental army, serving from Bunker Hill to Yorktown and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis."
A review of other sources for Revolutionary War records, as given in the next paragraph, show this record belongs to his son Benjamin not necessarily to him. Possibily his war record is similar to that of his son but no record has been found that shows this.
An application for a Revolutionary War pension for Benjamin the son shows that as a member of the local militia he served for about a month in 1776. and again in 1777, also he served for a period of time during the Battle of Saratoga. In 1781 he joined the American Army in New York and marched with them with his own oxen and cart to Yorktown, Virginia, hauling supplies for the army. He was in Yorktown during the battle with Cornwallis and using his oxen and cart hauled shot and shell from the James River to the battle line in Yorktown. He served about eight months in his service at Yorktown.
He owned lands near the Muddy River in Wallingford, CT and in 1752 conveyed 58 acres in Waterbury, CT to Caleb Munson for 700 pounds. His estate was distributed about 1783 to his widow, Elizabeth & their 5 children.
