Biography

Gilbert was a Friend (Quaker)

Gilbert was born 10d 1m 1747 [10 Mar 1746/7].[1] He was the son of Samuel and Anne Dorland.[1]

He married Lydia Ricketson on 22 Nov 1771 in Nine Partners, Dutchess, New York. Shortly thereafter, he acknowledged for "keeping company in a disorderly manner with her that is now my wife which is made manifest by her having a child soon after marriage."[2]

The Monthly Meeting of Friends to be held at Nine Partners the 21st. ??? mo. 1772.

Gilbert Dorland

Lydia Ricketson remarried after his death in 1774 . They had two children, Jonathan Dorland (1770 - 1817) and Elizabeth Dorland (1774 - 1833). Lydia is the sister of his younger brother John Dorland's wife Elizabeth Ricketson.

  • John Dorland b. 10 of 11m, 1749.
  • Mary Dorland b. 29 of 11m, 1747?, probably 1751.
  • Enoch Dorland b. 4 of 12m, 1753.

Notes

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".
