Biography

Mary was born in 1642, the daughter of John and Sarah Hickman Dorman.

In her mother's will, probated in Northampton County VA November 2, 1659, "Mary....was indentured servant to Alisia Custis 'until 16'." Mary also received a steer, a gold ring, and two yards of "fine Holland" cloth.

In 1662, "Christopher Nutter, having carried off Mary Dorman intending to marry her, is ordered to put up bond for his good behavior." They married in Northampton County on September 4, 1665. She and Christopher lived on a 150 acre farm, "Nutter's Delight" in Manokin, Maryland until 1677, when they moved to farm in present day Wicomico County MD."

May and Christopher's children were:

John Nutter (1667–Deceased)

Sarah Nutter (1669–1669)

John Nutter (1670–1703) moved to Sussex Co, DE

Mary Nutter (1672–1702)

Sarah Nutter (1674–1740) married Capt. William Piper

Christopher Nutter (1676–1676)

Charles Nutter (1680–1735) moved to Dorchester Co, MD

Thomas Nutter (1681–1702)

Christopher Nutter Jr. (1683–1729) married Margaret (Mackmorie?)

Matthew Nutter (1685–1720) married Ann Huett, daughter of Rev. John Huett. Matthew and Ann were parents of John Huett Nutter, and grandparents of his son Matthew Nathan Nutter, born and raised at Nutter's Neck, then moved to Harrison Co, VA to help build Nutter's Fort there (now near Clarksburg, WV).

William Nutter (1687–1735)

The following information is from the book by Clayton Torrence (1935) titled "Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland":

"In Aug. 1662, Christopher lived in Northampton-Accomack Co, VA before coming to Somerset Co. (p.453)

On Sept. 4, 1665, Christopher and Mary received a "settlers" land grant of 50 acres in Manokin, MD (p.477).

On Sept. 23, 1665, they purchased 150 acres in Manokin, called "Nutter's Delight" (p. 472).

In Aug. 1667 they received a patent for 300 acres on the north side of the Manokin River, called "Nutter's Purchase". Their home was designated in March 1671 or 1672 by order of the Somerset Grand Jury as one of four Presbyterian meeting houses or "preaching stations" in the county for Rev. Robert Maddox (p. 247). This was for both religious and political reasons. The Manokin Presbyterian Church was built on their homestead many years later.

In Nov. 1672 they sold "Nutter's Purchase" in Manokin to Charles Ballard, Sr., and they moved to Quantico Creek in Wicomico Co, where they purchased land called "Nutter's Neck" (p. 453).

In 1675 "Nutter's Purchase" in Manokin was inherited by Charles Ballard, Jr. (p. 453). In Aug. 1723, Charles Ballard Jr. conveyed one-fourth acre of "Nutter's Purchase" to the Elders for Manokin Presbyterian Church for a church building (p. 453), located on the same site where this church stands in 2016.

It is unknown where Christopher and Mary are buried, but likely to be on their homestead "Nutter's Neck" in Wicomico Co. They are NOT likely to be buried at Manokin Presbyterian Church in Somerset Co, which was not built until many years after Christopher died in 1702.

On Aug. 12, 2016 this researcher viewed all gravestones in the church cemetery and viewed the earliest modern plat map drawing of cemetery burial names and lot locations that could be found, which was said to have been created in the 1700s or 1800s. No "Nutter" surmanes were found either in the cemetery or on the cemetery map. However, a number of markers have no legible engraving and a number say "unknown". A church employee reported that some older gravesites were previously located in front of the church, where Somerset St. is now located."

Dorman-58 and Derman-4 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Married to same man, same parents, similiar birth date.

Derman-4 and Dorman-58 do not represent the same person because: The name Dorman is often written as either Darman or Derman. The dates of birth and death of Mary Dorman-58 would seem to mitigate against her being the same person as Mary Derman-4. I am satisfied that these are not the same person.
