John Dorn Sr was the son of George Dorn and Anna Elizabeth. He married Sarah Burkhalter and they lived in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Their children were William B, Robert M, John Jr., Benjamin, James, Rebecca, Mary, Densley, Solomon, Samuel, and Elijah.
John died on 30 May 1846 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. His will was recorded in Will Book D, page 285, on 16 June 1846.
Obituary
The Edgefield Advertiser, 10 Jun 1846
“Died, at his residence near Sleepy Creek, on May 30, 1846, John Dorn, Sr., in the 79th year of his age, after a painful and protracted illnes. He had been orderly and pious member of the Baptist Church for about 25 years. He was always cheerful; and amid the most trying scenes and misfortunes in life, seemed to possess the most perfect equanimity.”
Enslaved Persons
Census and Estate records indicate that John Dorn enslaved a number of people from at least 1800 until his death in 1846. Census provide only the gender and age of the enslaved persons. They reflect that in 1800 John enslaved 1 person; in 1820, 15; in 1830, 17; in 1840, 31.

In his will, John dictates that those he enslaved would be divided into nine equal lots. His estate papers[1] reflect the following division of enslaved persons:
