Pierce was born on 16 October 1864 in the Irishtown section of Clonmel, County Tipperary. His parents are Pierce Dorney, a gas-fitter, and Johanna Murphy.
Pierce migrated to the United States on The Queen in 1875 with his mother and three brothers.[1]
Pierce enlisted in the US Military on 19 December 1898 in the 9th infantry and was dishonourably discharged on 1 December 1900 at Pekin, China.[2] He was part of the China Relief Expedition.
