James W Dorsey was born on 1 Jan 1829 in Columbia, Georgia to parents Joel Dorsey and Elizabeth Shields.[1]
In the 1850 U. S. Census (September 6, 1850) the family lived in Columbia County, Georgia. James was the twenty-one years old and the eldest of the seven children in the household. His father, Joel, was sixty and his mother, Elizabeth was forty-five.[1]
On August 15, 1852 James was in Pike County, Georgia and witnessed the will of William Peirson (aka Pierson, Purson, Pearson). William signed the will "knowing from the extreme delicate situation of my health that I must soon die." He left everything to Margaret including land in Georgia and Alabama. She was to be the executor until her death or remarriage. If she remarried, the property was to be sold and divided equally between Margaret and each of their three children.[2]
The will was presented to the Pike County, Court of Probate on September 6, 1852 showing that William was deceased. James also signed those papers.[2]
James W. Dorsey married [[Anderson-54265|Martha Ann Peirson) on December 18, 1853 in Pike County, Georgia, United States.[3]
In the 1860 U. S. Census (July 9, 1860) James and Margaret lived in rural Pike County, Georgia. Their post office was Zebulion. The next family listed was that of Margaret's mother, Frances Anderson. James was thirty-one and had real estate valued at $1400 and a personal estate valued at $1430. They had three children: Martha Ann age five, Thomas Matthew age three and Lucinda I age one. Two of his stepchildren were listed in his household and the third was listed in the family of his mother-in-law.[4]
Two more children were born after the 1860 U. S. Census: Amanda Alice Dorsey about 1862 and James W. Dorcey 1863. James may have been born after the death of his father.[5]
Near the beginning of the Civil War, the 53rd Georgia, Company H was formed in the spring of 1862 in Pike County. They were known as the "Dixie Volunteers". James joined with the rank of corporal on about May 5, 1862. This regiment was involved in many of the eastern battles of the war. James was wounded at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863. He lived long enough to return home to Pike County. He died on August 1, 1863 in Pike, Georgia.[6]
He was buried at the Anderson Cemetery in Pike County, Georgia, United States.[7]
