Mervin was born in 1898. He was the son of Herschel Dorsey and Ida Ham. He married Grace L. Gregory in 1924. Their marriage was blessed with one child, Herschel. He passed away in 1971 and was laid to rest at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois.
