Biography

1698 Birth and Parents

She was born 27 April 1698 [1]

Anne Dorsey was the daughter of Colonel Edward Dorsey and his second wife, Margaret Larkin. [2][3]

  • Some popular genealogies show her name as Sarah Ann Dorsey.

Marriage

She married John Howard, referred to as Captain John Hammond, was the son of Charles Hammand and his wife Hannah Howard. [2]

Capt John Hammond was born in 1698 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [4]

John Hammond, son of Major Charles Hammond and Hannah Howard his wife, was born in St. Anne’s Parish, and inherited considerable land at the death of his father. [3]

Residence

John Hammond established his seat at Elk Ridge. [2]

1753 Husband's Will and Death

John Hammond's will, dated October 2, 1753, was probated in Anne Arundel County on November 12, following.: [3]

  • To wife Ann the dwelling plantation during life and negroes, then to son Charles.
  • To daughter Hannah, wife of John Welsh, 20 shillings.
  • To daughter Ann, wife of Francis Davis, 20 shillings.
  • To sons John and Charles "Hammond Contrivance".
  • To daughters Hamutal and Rachel personalty.
  • To son-in-law Henry Griffith .£25.
  • To brother Philip Hammond personalty.
  • To daughter Ruth Griffith personalty.
  • Residue to children: Hannah, Ruth, Rachel, John and Charles.

Captain John Hammond died in November 1753 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. His burial location is unknown. [4]

The appraisal of his personal estate was filed on January 15, 1755, being valued at £999/4/11. His daughters, Hamutah Hammond and Rachel Hammond, approved as the kinswomen. Among the personalty were 15 negro slaves, one white servant-man, and the usual number of books found in a Hammond household. The executors, Ann Hammond and Henry Griffith, filed the inventory at court on July 2, 1755. [3]

Ann's Will and Death

The will of Ann Hammond, his widow, was dated December 1, 1779, and proved in Anne Arundel County, July 1, 1786. She named her daughters, Hannah Welsh, Ruth Griffith, and Rachel Mackelfresh, and her son, Charles. [2]

His widow in the presence of Rebecca Dorsey, Joseph Howard and Edward Gaither Jr. wrote her last will and testament on December 1, 1779, but it was not probated in Anne Arundel until July 1, 1786. Her heirs were Hamutah Welsh, Charles Hammond, Ruth Griffith and Rachel Mackelfresh. [3]
