Biography

Greenbury (Greenberry) Dorsey was born about 1710 in Anne Arundel, Maryland to parents John Dorsey and Comfort Stimpson. No record of his birth has been found, but he appears to be the eldest son of his parents who were married in 1702. He is mentioned in the will of his mother to receive one shilling and no more.[1]

On the 1st of August 1726 he was appointed as a Ranger for Baltimore County by Charles Calvert, the proprietor. Part of his job involved collecting stray livestock and determining their owners.[2]

Property

Greenberry Dorsey, son of Col. John Dorsey, is listed as one of the original owners of a lot in Old Joppa at the time of its establishment. In the 1754 debt book of land rents due Greenberry Dorsey is identified as owning two properties: Nanjemy & part of Three Sisters.[3]

Marriage & Family

The notice of his appointment as a ranger is followed by a deed of gift from his father, John Dorsey on the occasion of his marriage to Mary Belt dated 18 JUN 1726, the daughter of John Belt of Baltimore County, The gift included a white servant woman named Mary Harris, some livestock, furniture, books and musical instruments. [4] Two children of Greenberry Dorsey are mentioned in the will of his mother, Comfort and John so they must be the oldest children.[5]

The birth of Greenberry Dorsey, the son of Greenberry & Mary on 10 MAR 1729 is recorded in the register of St. Paul's Church.[6]
