Biography
John was born in 1814 in Virginia.
In the 1850 census John (age 38), Farmer, was in Salado, Bexar, Texas, United States. He was living with wife Rachel, 3 young children, and his brother Benjamin.[1]
In the 1860 census John (age 46), Farmer, was in Precinct 4, Gillespie, Texas.[2] He was living with 4 inferred children.
He passed away about 1863, when his will was probated in Gillespie County, Texas. His will mentioned a son, two daughters, two brothers, a niece and a nephew.[3] A transcription of the will is available on the Transcribed Will of John E Doss
Slaves
John was the owner of a plantation in Gillespie County, Texas along with a number of slaves. His will mentioned some of the slaves by name. He was also listed as a slaveowner in the Slave Schedules of 1850 and 1860.
