James was born in 1818. James was born near Yorkville, South Carolina. He moved to Georgia at an early age. Apparently when he answered the call for volunteers, he returned to South Carolina and enlisted into Company A 12 Regiment, South Carolina Volunteer Infantry.
He remained with the company and is listed on the surrender roles at Appomattox, Virginia.
