Biography

Benjamin Harrison Dotson was born to James Nelson Dotson and his first wife Minnie Hughie Dotson . James and Minnie were first cousins. James was the son of Nelson Dotson and Minnie was the daughter of Martin Dotson. Ben was the first child of this marriage. He was born on Apr 11 1890 in McDowell County now Buncombe County. He married Mamie Dotson his first cousin. She was the daughter of Joseph S Dotson and Mary Jackson. Ben and Mamie had two sons together Jess Lee Dotson and James Edward Dotson. Ben was a barber in Asheville until he became ill and was taken to Morganton to the State Hospital there. He succumbed to his illness on Jun 29 1932. The word was sent to his father James when he died. The Sheriff brought the news to James that Ben had died and he could go get the body and have it buried at home or they could bury him in the hospital cemetery. Grandpa James had no way of going after the body and did not have the money to have it shipped by train home. He decided to let them bury Ben in the hospital cemetery in Morganton. That is where he remains today. It is a very well kept cemetery. I located the cemetery and his plot in the cemetery and then took my mother to visit his grave. She was the only sibling that ever was able to go to his burial site. Mother was pleased with the final resting site of her oldest brother and mentioned how nice the cemetery was kept.
