Biography

Joseph was born in 1851, in Wallace Bay, Cumberland Co., NS. He died in 1934.

From Len Dutton's Book: Joseph left Wallace, NS in 1860 He went to sea on the "Mary Ann", built at Wallace, with his bro. ABC Dotten, as the master. He deserted ship in New Orleans, Louisiana and changed the spelling of his surname to Dutton. In 1871, he arrived in Brooklyn, NY, where he was a ship's carpenter. In 1890, he built a large house in Sea Girt, NJ. He also lived in Allenwood, NJ from 1883-1892. In 1897, his large family lived on 34th St., between 4th and 5th Aves., Brooklyn, NY. His oldest son, William Lusby Dutton, and a girl, Birdena Coons, Moved to Oxford, Cumberland Co., NS, where Luther S. was born. They then moved to Wallace Bridge, NS. In 1899 Joseph bought the farm of his brother-in-law, Herbert H. Sterling, at Sterling Brook, Hants Co., near Selmah, NS and moved there when Ervan was born. In 1905, Joseph lived alone in Brooklyn, NY (his family stayed in Sterling Brook, NS), at 15-3rd Place, as a roomer, and worked as a carpenter. For a short while during the depression of 1907, he was a carpenter for J. H. Williams Co, where his first cousin William G. Dotten also worked, as did Wm. L., Joseph's half-brother. Joseph's first two wives were first cousins, once removed, and 14 years apart in age. He joined the IOOF by card to Maspeth Lodge, Brooklyn, NY #870, on 16 Dec. 1903.

In the guest book of Fred and Sadie Anthony, he, Lucy and several other Wallace, NS relatives signed their names as ‘Dotton’, not Dotten.
