Jacob was born on April 4, 1794 in East District Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania and a son of Daniel Dotterer and Barbara Muthart. Jacob married Sarah Sassaman on June 14, 1820 in New Hanovcer Township, Montogmery County, Pennsylvania. He passed away on August 23, 1885 and buried in the Hill Union (also known as St. Joseph's/Oley Lutheran Church/St. John's Lutheran Church) Cemetery in Pike Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
