Biography

Delphos Republican September 11, 1931

Andrew Benton Doty was born in Cook County, Illinois, December 10, 1851, and died Sept. 6, 1931 at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 26 days. His parents were Samuel and Delilah Windbiglar Doty. Andrew had two brothers and one sister; William P. Doty, Samuel Levi Doty, and Rachael Jane Doty.

In 1854, the family moved to Iowa, and farmed there until 1870, when they came to Kansas and settled on a homestead in Cloud County. This homestead later was divided, and became the farms of Andrew and Samuel Doty. William P. Doty, the eldest brother, secured a homestead of his own.

The Doty family was among the early settlers, and, like many other pioneers, lived in a sod house of one room as their first home. Within a short time they erected a comfortable house for their family of six members. They had to go to Salina for their millings products, and buffalos of the plains furnished a part of their winter's meat supply each year.

The mother passed from this life in 1880 and the father, who made his home for six years with Mr. And Mrs. Andrew Doty, died in 1890.

Andrew Doty was married at the age of twenty-nine to Miss Cassie Haun, who died two years later.

In 1884, Mr. Doty united in marriage with Miss Luetta Rogers, who for forty-seven years has been his faithful and loving companion. Three children were born to them. The first was Ora Ethel, born in 1885 and died June 3, 1898. The others are Millie Aletha, born in 1890 and Myrtle Troy, born in 1894.

The Dotys lived on their farm until April 1914, when Mr. Doty's failing health made necessary their removal to Delphos.

Mr. Doty had his twenty-five year jewel from the I.O.O.F., which was presented to him about three years ago. He and Mrs. Doty have been members of the Methodist Church since Oct. 14, 1906.

For several years, Mr. Doty had been a patient sufferer of heart trouble, and his good wife has even been his faithful nurse and attendant. He was a man of few words, and until his eyesight failed him, he loved to read God's word from the Holy Bible. He will be remembered as a good and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Mr. Doty is survived by his wife, Mrs. Luetta Doty; his daughters, Mrs. Millie Aletha Teed and Mrs. Myrtle Troy Goodall; five grand-daughters, Uda, Earlene, Hortense and Irene Teed, and Viva Goodall, all of Delphos, Kansas; a niece, Mrs. Will McCoillough of Glasco, kansas; and a nephew, Frank Doty of Delphos. There remain also several other nephews and neices, among whom is a grand-nephew, Samuel Levi Attridge of Salina, Kansas, a grandson of Mr. Doty's brother, the late Samuel Levi Doty. The latter was deceased August 17, 1931.

Mr. Doty will be missed by his loved ones and a host of friends who mourn of him passing.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, with Rev. E.J. Vaughan in charge. Burial was made in Delphos Cemetery.
