Biography

Edwin Snow Doubleday was born in California, USA, on the 3rd of February, 1861.^[1] He was the son of Charles or Chester Powell Doubleday and Lucy Peasley Colby.

Edwin was 5 feet 8 inches tall, with hazel eyes and brown hair.^[1]

At the 1880 census his family were living in New York. Present were: Chester P. Doubleday (56) merchant, Lucy (50?). Sadie (21) school teacher, and "Edward" S. (19).^[2]

He married Mary Louisa Cobcroft at St. Matthias' Church, Paddington, NSW, on the 5th of March, 1885.^[3][4] According to the 1910 census, Mary migrated to America in 1885.^[5] Their son Edwin Cobcroft Doubleday was born in New Jersey, USA, in September 1888 and baptised at Parramatta, NSW, in March 1889. Dorothy Isabel Doubleday was born at the Royal Hotel, Randwick, NSW, in 1891.

In 1905 the family were living in Manhattan, New York, with Edwin's mother Lucie P. Doubleday and sister Sarah Doubleday. Edwin was working as an auditor. Present were: Edwin Doubleday (45), Mary L. (44), son Edwin (16), daughter Dorothy (13), Lucie P. (76), Sarah (43), and servant Fanny Harris (19).^[6]

They moved to Salem St, Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts by 1910. Present at the census were: Edwin S. (49) accountant, Mary L. (49), Edwin C (21), Dorothy (19), and Irish servant Nellie Flynn (33).^[5]

He died in Springfield, Mass., USA, in 1926,^[7] and was buried in the Oak Grove cemetery, Springfield.

Research Notes

The 1910 census records that his father was born in Vermont and his mother in New Hampshire.
