William was 21 when he left Scotland for St. John's Island on 1 May 1775 on the ship "The Lovely Nelly" sailing from Kirkbean, Dumfries and Galloway. He was passenger #45 and John Douglas, age 25, was passenger #26. Both were labourers, each planning "to mend himself." Scotland's economy was very poor at that time. [1]
"In 1778 William acquired a large block of land near Head of Hillsborough in Lot 38 where he engaged in farming and stock raising." In about 1779, he married Catherine Millar. He was a magistrate noted for his energy and sound common sense.
William died 16 Feb 1835 (aged 87–88) and was buried in Saint Peters Harbour Cemetery in Morell East, Kings County, Prince Edward Island. [2] His will was dated 17 Jun 1834 and was proved on 20 Feb 1835. It names ten children and prohibits his sons from alienating their lands out of the family of Douglas. [3]
Children:
Stanhope Sands of Time gives his birth in 1750; the notes on son Thomas' Find A Grave memorial says 1753. Both lack sources.
