Biography

Clifton may have been my dad Clark Douglas' favorite sibling. They were very close, although 13 years apart. They always slept together, with Clifton enfolding Clark on cold nights. According to Clark, "Clifton was more of a dad than Dad was." In January of 1919, brother Fred came home from the army with the measles. Clifton told a neighbor about Fred's measles and that he was afraid of them, because he had heard they were hard on heavy people. Everyone in the family got them except their dad, Decatur, and Clifton and Zelma went on into pneumonia (both were heavy). Clifton went out to the outhouse one night in the snow, and died the next day. He might have been "out of his head." The local doctor had been out to see Clifton, but the Dr. was "drunk as usual." Clifton tried to revive baby brother Jesse when he fell into the rain barrel and drowned. Clifton's WWI draft registration card describes him as short and stout with brown eyes, light brown hair. Clark dreamed of Clifton a lot until the late 1970's. He dreamed of Clifton's homecoming after visiting a farm elsewhere and how happy he was to see him. (Interview with Champ Clark Douglas, 1988) Clifton's obituary and his draft card state his birth date was 25 Sep 1892, although the family Bible says Sep 15, 1892. Also in the obit...."Garland Douglas arrived home from the Great Lakes Training school Monday morning. He came too late for the funeral of his brother, Clifton Douglas, which was held last Saturday at 2 o'clock." (Benton Co. Record, 1/24/1919)
