Mary Douglass was born on September 28, 1819, in Chatton, Northumberland, England, the daughter of John Douglass and Margaret Wilson. She married Samuel James Bird on April 23, 1840, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. They had eight children in 20 years. She died on April 16, 1867, in York, New Brunswick, Canada, at the age of 47, and was buried there.
