Biography

Rose was born 31st December 1783 and baptised 8th February 1784 at St. Katherine Coleman, London, England, daughter of Alexander and Susannah Douglas.[1]

Rose had at least two siblings: Rachel DOUGLAS bap. 1786 and William Henry DOUGLAS bap. 1788.

Rosanna DOUGLAS, spinster married John LACY, bachelor 27th September 1801 at Christ Church with St Mary and St Stephen, Spitalfields, London, England. Witnessed by Alexander DOUGLAS and George ASHTON {parish clerk}[2] Rosanna was only 16 when she married, which was very young, and under the legal age to marry without consent of parents, Although the marriage does not state she was a minor, or had consent from parents, it is likely the Alexander Douglas who was a witness, was her father.

Husband John LACEY (a porter[3]) must of died (or deserted) sometime between 1822 and 1831. No burial has been found for John LACEY.

Rose Ann LACEY, widow married William OLIVER , widower 20th December 1831 at St. Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England. Witnessed by James Longman GAWLER & John SEAGER {parish clerks}[4]

Rose Ann OLIVER, aged 63 years, wife of William OLIVER (labourer) died 16th June 1847 at Bolingbroke Road, Battersea, Surrey. Cause of death: Hydrothorax. Informant: Lucy CURNICK of 5 King Street, Islington {Middlesex}, in attandance .[5] She was buried 22nd June 1847 at St. Mary, Battersea, Surrey, England[6]

  6. Lucy LACEY bap. 1813 Kensington, Middlesex, England[3]bur. 1815 Chelsea, Middlesex [12]
  7. Stephen LACEY bap. 1815 Kensington, Middlesex, England[13]

Census

6th June 1841: Rosa OLIVER resident at Bridge Road, Battersea, Surrey, England. Aged 55 years. Living with William OLIVER[17] N.B. This is the same address that daughter Lavinia Lucy Lacy gave as her residence when she married in 1837.

Research Notes

Rose Ann & John Lacey were living at New Road, Chelsea in 1815 when daughter Lucy was buried. Other LACEY burials where New Road, Chelsea is recorded as residence:

  • 1826 July 2nd William LACEY aged 2 1/2 years {b. 1824} buried St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex[18]
  • 1829 July 26th Robert LACEY aged 19 {b. 1810} buried St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex[19]
  • 1829 October 4th George LACEY aged 3 years {b. 1826} buried St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex[20]

These are most probably children of John & Rose Ann - baptisms yet to be located.

It is unlikely that any gravestones exist for the LACEY children as "The large burial ground which surrounded the church was converted into a public garden in 1881, the gravestones being placed to form a boundary wall"[21]

Not much is known about John LACEY, apart from the fact he was a porter. It is possible he was the son of John & Elizabeth LACEY who were living in Keppel Street (Now Sloane Avenue), Chelsea, Middlesex. The death certificates of John & Elizabeth LACEY have been ordered to see if Rose Ann Oliver was an informant.
