Biography

Research Notes

There is a birth recorded in 1713 for a Hugh Douglas with parents James Douglas and Jean Farquhar.[1] Location is New Cumnock. If first child was born 1728 then this record may not be correct, but isn't beyond the bounds of possiblity.

Births in New Cumnock run from 1706 to 1854
there are no births recorded before 1706.
Given the naming pattern of Hugh and Margaret's children
in all probability Hugh Douglas who was having children with Margaret Gilmour from 1728 to 1755 would have been born
before 1706 in New Cumnock and have parents named Mungo and Mary.
Indeed when we look at the naming pattern that Hugh and Margaret's
children have we find that:-
1st child 1st female named Margaret
after her maternal grandmother Margaret Campbell
2nd child 2nd female named Mary
would be named after paternal grandmother not yet found ???
3rd child female named Ann ???
4th child 1st male named Mungo
after paternal grandfather Mungo Douglas??? not yet found
5th child female named Mary
assumption that previous child named Mary has died
6th child male named John
after maternal grandfather John Gilmour
7th child female named Agnes???
8th child male named Mungo
assumption that previous child named Mungo has died
9th and 10th children named Hugh after father
this is a strong indication that this Douglas family
was traditional in it's naming pattern and that we
should be looking for a Mungo Douglas / Mary ???? marriage
but the New Cumnock records do not facilitate this
there being none before 1855.

The assumption that this is the Hugh Douglas
who died in North America is unsafe.
That a Hugh Douglas lived and died in North America is probable,
people are looking for his roots.
He is not this Hugh Douglas WikiTree id:- Douglas-9831
No deaths were recorded prior to 1855 in New Cumnock
to look elsewhere for a death is unsafe without good reason
and genuine sources detailing fact not hearsay.

That Hugh Douglas was having children with Margaret Gilmour
from 1728 to 1755 in New Cumnock is fact,
these births are recorded and sources given for each child
all born in Scotland now added by me to WikiTree.

Finally, it might be possible to expand ones knowledge of a family line
through wills and testaments, however having scanned through
the indices to those which are held by Scottish National Records
I found none relating to Douglas in New Cumnock Ayrshire.

Hi Tim

Could you please review your primary sources for the parents of Hugh. The names are correct, James Douglas and Jean Farquhar, however there is no primary source to support that their decedents are as indicated. I don't believe we can with any certainty link Hugh's parents to their existing lines, i.e. Laird of Mains. References to the relevant records at Scotland People would be useful. FamilySearch and ancestry can be full of mistakes. Kind Regards, Ian

Thank you very much Mr Grant. I have removed Hugh Douglas-9831 from being a son of James Campbell-9832 because the locations of the two don't match. I didn't know where Mains, Scotland was until I looked and found it near Dundee, Scotland. To say that Hugh Douglas, born in New Cummock, Ayrshire, is the son of a Laird of Mains is silly on geography alone. Of course, your arguments are valid. It is strange that Hugh Douglas-9831 parents have the same names as the 12th Laird of Mains and his wife Farquhar but it is just a coincidence. I think that both Hugh Douglas' mother is Jean Farquhar-719 and grandmother Jean Smith-193356 could be accurate, but Hugh Douglas-9831's grandfather Alexander Farquhar-789 from Aberdeenshire would be not accurate. I have learned a lot with this lesson so my current goal is to be 1500 certified. Thank you for your response and I know that claiming a Scottish Lord as ancestor happens but is not ethical. Ancestrylibrary.com is full of mistakes but now I know that Familysearch.org has mistakes also. The 18th and 17th century are interesting times in Scotland. My Nanny Fulton-3797 is a Stewart-Appin from tiny Kilmaurs, Ayrshire and I would not like to see her reaction if I didn't correct my mistakes. Kind Regards Also, Tim.

Hi Tim

Thanks for replying. I think unfortunately we are at a dead end in terms of identifying the parents of Hugh other than knowing their names. We do not have a their marriage record in the OPR records. The OPR records are the only real source of truth. When you get back to the late 1600s not all marriage and births are recorded which can be a problem. Hugh is my direct ancestor and have spent quite a while trying to trace his ancestors but haven't found any records/ information that helps.

I can't find the birth record for Jean Farquhar-719 in the Old Parish Records. What was the source of the information as it should list her parents. Until we are certain what's going on I think we should remove the parent links from Jean Farquhar-719. What I would do is put your information or thoughts in a research notes section for Jean Farquhar-719. Jean's Parents appear to be from moved to Aberdeenshire as you've found out and also appear to be Aristocratic so probably unlikely to be correct. By doing this it will give us more accurate 'connections' as at the moment we are connected to most of Scotland's nobility!

A lot of my mothers family are from around Kilmaurs/Riccarton in Ayrshire. Lot's of Douglas & Farquhar's!

Let me know what you think.

Kind Regards, Ian
