Charles was born in 1844 in Lynn, Massachusetts. He was the son of Frederick Douglass and Anna Murray.

Military Service

Regiment(s): 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, 5th Massachusetts Cavalry, Capital City Guards' Battalion of the District of Columbia National Guard

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company F of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 19 years old, single and working as a printer when enlisted on 18 April 1863 from Rochester, New York. He transferred to the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry on 19 March 1864 for a promotion to First Sergeant.[1] The highest rank attainable to soldiers of color at this time was Sergeant Major.

His brother Lewis also served with the 54th, as did his brother-in-law Nathan Sprague.
