Biography

John was born in 8 Aug 1748. He passed away about 1828.

His will was dated 29 Jul 1828 and proved 27 Oct 1828 in the County of Orange, Virginia. Transcription:

I John Douglass senior of Orange county and state of Virginia do make my last will and testament I manner and form following that is to say 1st I desire that so much of my property as may be necessary may be sold for the discharge of my just debts. 2nd I desire that all my lands shall be equally divided between my two sons William Douglass and John Douglass in the following manner the track on which I live this my son William to have all the land on the west side of the road leading from Barboursville to Fredericksburg and my son John is to have all the land on the east side of the said road leading from Barboursville to Fredericksburg by paying my son William the difference but if they cannot agree o the division they are to appoint two or more disinterested men who shall proceed to value the land on each side of the road and my son John shall pay over the difference to my son William making his part equal. 3rdly I desire that the track of land whereon my son William Douglass now lives in Albemarle county may be equally divided between him and his brother John Douglass. 4thly I desire that my son in law Tandy Bowcock as I have as his security paid as much or more that his part of my estate may have one dollar to be divided between him and his children. 5thly It is my will and desire that my house servant Chardy (sp) for her attention and faithful services to me may be free and I hereby immancipate her and as it is contrary to the laws of this commonwealth for her to remain her longer that twelve months after my decease, it is my desire that she may select some friend to convey her to some place where she may enjoy her freedom in safety. 6thly It is my desire that all the rest of my estate of what ever description may be equally divided between my son William Douglass and my son John Douglass. 7thly and lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons William Douglass and John Douglass executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty ninth day of July 1828 Signed sealed published and declared John Douglass. At a monthly court held for the county of Orange at the courthouse on Monday the twenty seventh of October 1828 This Last will and testament of John Douglass deceased, was proved by the oaths of Wm H Johnson, Ro C Johnson and Henry G George the witnesses hereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of John Douglass as executor therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with John Bowcock, Henry Herndon, Ezekiel Wilhoit and Jacob Wallers his securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of fifteen thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs certificate was granted him for obtaining  ? ? in ? from William Douglass that other executor named in the said will be more accepted to the court refused the executorship.
