Biography
William Dove was born about 1818 in Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. He was baptised on the 15th February 1818 at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield, the son of Thomas Dove and Ann (Simms) Dove.[1] His father was a framework knitter.[2]
He married Alice Shooter at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 6th April 1836. [3] William was a bachelor, Alice a spinster, and both were "of this parish". The witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Hunt and Eliza Dove.[4]
In 1841, William and Alice lived on Low Street, Sutton in Ashfield, where William was a "FWK", or framework knitter. They had three sons: John (5) Thomas (3) and William. (11mo)[5]
On the 1851 census, William and Alice lived on King Street, Sutton in Ashfield with their three sons and two daughters.[6]
The 1861 census records William and Alice living on King Street with four children.[7]
In 1871, William and Alice lived on King Street with daughter Elizabeth (17), son Daniel (15) and grandchildren Thomas (age 5) and Mary Jane.(8mo)[8]
On the 1881 census, a now widowed William and his grandson Thomas, now 16 were lodging in King Street in the household of William & Ann Henstock.[9]
He died in December 1884, aged 68 years,[10] and was buried at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Ashfield on the 29th December 1884.[11]
