James was born in Holme on Spalding Moor, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised there in 1836. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dove.[1] The family lived at the Old Workhouse in Holme in 1841.[2]
In 1861 James married Ann Fowler.[3] At the time of the census that year the newly-weds lived in Holme with their baby son, Thomas. James worked as an agricultural labourer.[4] By 1871 they lived in North Cave, Yorkshire.[5]
Ann Dove worked as a charwoman in 1881, when the family lived in Normanton, Yorkshire.[6] When the census was taken, James was a patient at the Penistone Union Workhouse in Thurlstone, Yorkshire[7] – being admitted was the only way he could get free healthcare.
In 1891 the Doves lived in Morley, Yorkshire, where James worked as a coal miner.[8] James and Ann had moved to Rigton, Yorkshire, by 1901; James had become a hind (a farm foreman).[9]
